On the web dealing has grown on an ongoing basis in the previous decade. A stock broker must use a dealer for you to enter their own stock requests.

Christmas Stocking from Sandy by -Vivie-

Like most Associated Content Producers, I'm not especially wealthy, nor do I have money burning a hole in my pocket. If you have either of these "problems", then this article won't mean much to you.

But like many AC producers, I take good care of my money and have a little bit in savings. I like the idea of putting my savings into the stock market and earning a high rate of return.

Sadly, stock brokers charge per trade. E-trade, for instance, will charge me $12.99 to make a stock purchase and another $12.99 to sell. That means if I invest $300 and earn 8% the first year, I still am in the hole because I had to pay $26 in fees. And this is from an online discount broker!

Now for big time investors, this isn't a problem. If I buy a thousand of dollars of a stock, $26 in fees won't have much of an impact on my overall return. But I'm an Associated Content Producer, so that won't work for me.

So I've gone on a search for any way I can possibly circumvent the fees. For investors at our level, it is the best way to maximize our returns. For us, why research a high returning stock if you aren't researching a low fee way to buy and sell the stock?

I've found two web sites that are head and shoulders above the rest, and I'm happy to share them with you.

ComputerShare

The first is Computershare (formerly EquiServe). At Computershare, you purchase stock directly through a company. This is called a Direct Stock Purchase Plan (DSPP) The fees vary from company to company, but generally are very low.

With Exxon-Mobil, for instance, you pay $10 to set up your account, and then each time you purchase stock the company pays your fees. The minimum investment is only $250 to start. Even AC producers can afford that!

The knock on Computershare is that you are limited to companies that decide to offer Direct Stock Purchase Plans. Also, I've found that it can take a week or two to get your account going, so you are out of luck if the stock price goes up in those two weeks.

For a list of stocks you can purchase directly from the company, visit this link that lists Computershare's DSPP companies.

TradeKing

The second great fee-dodging site is TradeKing. TradeKing is targeted to people who trade options and other fancy investments, and this is where they make most of their money. Consequently, they have great prices on standard, boring stock purchases and sales. Only $4.95 per trade!

TradeKing is the lowest fee I've been able to find anywhere. Also, once you have your money in your account, trades are instant. This pleases me since I've been following stocks closely and trying to buy at a particular low price. TradeKing has become my preferred broker.

Are you confused by all of the confusing options trading that the site mentions? I'm not, but I wish I was confused. They're not good for long-term investing. Just ignore them! All you need to know is that they save you $8 per trade versus E-Trade.

With lower fees, our investments can earn higher returns even if we aren't rich. I suggest you research your stocks, but also research who you use to buy those stocks. At our dollar amounts, both are equally important!

Steps to make your home Wheelchair offered. Very well the first thing to view could be the peak that you're going to have.

Hooks & Ramps by .....Just Pete

Let's face it. If you're in a wheelchair, you're not going up a flight stairs. But it's not just for people in a wheelchair, anyone who has trouble walking can have some serious problems around stairs. So what do you do when you live in a home with steps and you can't get inside? You need a handicap ramp. In this article I'll explain the math and a few basic principles on designing your own handicap ramp.

Now I obviously can't tell you how to build a handicap ramp to fit your own steps due to the fact that everyone's home may be different, but what I can tell you is the basic math equations that you will need to build a handicap ramp according to the specifications of the standard building code. While each county and state has its own specific code required for building a handicap ramp, I will explain the southern standard building codes rules for a ramp. Remember to always call your local building department to verify your design and purchase any permits that may be required for a handicap ramp.

So lets start with some basic math first. To begin, you will need to find the height of your handicap ramp. Using a straight edge or a level, place it on top of the platform you are building the handicap ramp to. Hang it over the edge and measure down to the bottom of your platform. According to the southern standard building code, a handicap ramp must fall no more than one inch in height per one foot of length. This formula is the ideal for wheelchairs and other mobility devices.

Lets use the formula now on my porch. I measured down my steps at home and came up with the measurement of two feet. Now we need to multiply 24 inches by 12. 12 is the number of inches in one foot. Our answer is 288 inches. That means our handicap ramp must be a total length of 288 inches or 24 feet long. The formula is height x 12" = ramp length.

Now that you have the length of your ramp determined you will need to cut some stringers. Stringers are the long boards your ramp will be supported by. Your best bet for stringers are to use 2x12's made from pressure treated yellow pine. Yellow pine is the strongest structural wood there is. Measure the 2x12's to length and cut. Now mark one end to the height of the handicap ramp. You may need to place another 2x12 on top of the other to achieve the required height. Using a chalk box, snap a line from one end of the 2x12 to the other end that you just marked and rip cut the board using a circular saw.

Now you can use the stringers to build your ramp. You may need to notch the stringers around steps or other obstacles as needed. Attach supports between the stringers at least every 16 inches. Use at least 2x6's or larger for supporting the weight of people. For plywood, a good bet is to use at least ¾ inch or thicker. Using pressure treated plywood or marine grade is a real good idea for outdoor use, otherwise you will need to weatherproof it with paint or water seal. Good luck with your handicap ramp!

Gem stock market game by wealthboomers

The character Crazy Eyes in the film "Mr. Deeds" comments that "I watch the stock market channel all the time." The character distrusts the host of the channel and suspects that others are falling for false information, but Crazy Eyes is not as gullible. Watching programming may not help your stock picks, but knowing a little about the history of the stock market might improve your odds for investments. The stock market has offered a place for legal speculation since 1792 and it has a strong lure for many investors who may or may not know a few interesting facts about its history.

Origins

The Buttonwood Agreement of 1792 established the foundation for the modern day stock market in the United States. The earliest firms created government bonds and bank stocks the same year. The New York Stock Exchange formally organized in 1817 with just 24 brokerage firms with two open trading sessions that included reading the stock offerings on a public floor of a local Wall Street coffee house. The Dow Jones Industrial Average started business in 1896. The NASDAQ, a stock exchange based on electronic transfers, opened for trading in 1971 and this exchanged combined with the American Stock Exchange in 1998. The Philadelphia Exchange merged with the NASDAQ in 2007.

Great Depression Regulation

After the problems of margin buying and lending that contributed to the Great Depression in the United States during the 1920s and 1920s, the federal government passed the Securities Act in 1933 to regulate practices that contributed to fraud and poor economic planning. The act set up a federal disclosures and registered new stock issues. The Securities Exchange Act of 1934 added controls over fraudulent practices and disclosure and established the Securities and Exchange Commission to oversee the new regulations.

Index and Mutual Fund Trading

Stocks are not the only item traded on the stock exchange. The market also trades mutual and index funds. Massachusetts Investors Trust presented the first offerings of mutual funds in 1924, and the Wellington Fund combined stocks and bond offerings in 1928. Wells Fargo Bank established the first index fund in 1971 that allowed creation of stock market offerings by The Vanguard Group soon after the index creation.

Market Closings

Stock market closings correspond to world events. The longest closing of the New York Stock Exchanged happened July 31, 1914 during World War I when the war sent stock prices plunging. The market remained closed for a time and operated on limited hours for over four months. The market closed again in March 1933 in a "Bank Holiday" to stabilize trading during the Great Depression. President John F. Kennedy's death November 22, 1963 closed the market for the day. Trading stopped for four days after the bombing of the New York World Trade Center September 11, 2001.

The Best and the Worst Decades "The Wall Street Journal" claims investors during the 1950s saw the best returns on money invested in the stock market. The decade of 2000 marked the worst period of investment, even when the decade of the Great Depression is included. Financial reporter Tom Lauricella notes that, "Investors would have been better off investing in pretty much anything else, from bonds to bold or even just stuffing money under a mattress."

History as a Modern Investment Indicators

1. Poor Markets Include Prime Times for Investments.

The Great Depression of the 1930s included prime times for investors. The period from July 1932 through July 1933 recorded the Dow Jones Industrial Average's best year, marking a gain from 41.22 in July and increasing to 105.04 almost to the day a year later.

2. Low Risk Entrance Points Occur Regardless of Market Conditions.

The Bear Market of 1929 through 1932 provided investors a chance to enter the market with low amounts of capital. Modern investors have had similar investment opportunities, including such options as purchasing General Motors stock at bargain basement prices in 2008.

With the all Federal Reserve interest rate cuts lately -- and with another expected at the end of April -- it is no surprise that many people are wondering what interest rates have to do with things that affect their lives. One of these things is the stock market.

Interest rates and the stock market

It is true that interest rates do not have a direct effect on the stock market. Instead, they have an influence on the stock market. Interest rates influence the stock market in two main ways: through companies and through economic perception. The Federal Reserve sets interest rate policy regarding the rate at which banks lend money to each other. This is an important point to be made. When an interest rate cut is made, it has certain effects on the psyche of those involved.

Interest rates and their effects on companies. This is one of the ways interest rates affect the stock market. Companies can get loans at lower interest rates when a cut is made. When interest rates go up, it costs more to borrow money. This affects overhead costs. And it means that companies' profits are affected. So if interest rates go down, the thought is that companies will spend less money and therefore have higher profits. This invites investors to put their money in the stock market, and it raises the market values. Interest rate hikes, on the other hand, can have an opposite effect in some cases.

Interest rates and economic perception. Investors can get an idea of where the economy is headed due to interest rates. The perception is that when rates are cut, the economy is being stimulated and is likely to expand. In the case of the recent interest rate cuts, many perceived that the Fed was willing to do anything to help the stock market, and this meant that there were jumps in stock values directly following the rate cuts. On the other hand, interest rate hikes put a cap on economic expansion. They can also indicate inflation fears, and this can influence the stock market.

Obviously, though, interest rates are just one factor to consider in stock investing. Your decisions should not be based solely on interest rate cuts or hikes. There are many influences on the stock market, and sometimes perception can make the market behave in ways that are contrary to conventional knowledge. The stock market is unpredictable. But it is still possible to discern general trends.

Chpt5-SecA: Where and How Do You Buy Stock? by palynp

While always seems to get the attention of the media, silver is a viable investment as well due to its use in industrial applications and its use in coins and jewelry. Silver has been a desired element for thousands of years as a result of its beauty and workability in make jewelry and other ornaments. As far as industrial use, silver is used in high end electrical components due to its electrical conductivity. With this wide range of uses, silver should continue to be a desired commodity in the future.

One way to invest in silver is stock investing. Buying stocks in companies that produce silver is done just like any other company or industry. The top two silver mining countries are Mexico and Peru. The United States, Canada, and Australia are also large producers of silver. Investors looking for silver producing stocks may want to stay with the last three due to the more stable economies and governments in these countries. Investors need to thoroughly research companies before investing in them as their possible stock price improvement is not tied only to the price of silver. Silver is often mined as a byproduct of copper and other precious metals, so a silver producing company might not even focus its energies of the production of silver.

Most people who are seeking to invest in silver are probably of thinking of buying silver coins and silver bars. The trick here is to find sellers who are actually selling at the spot price of silver (spot plus a reasonable fee). A general rule is that the more silver you are buying the less percentage of fees you should be expected to pay. When buying coins to invest in their silver content be certain you are not buying coins for their numismatic value (the value to a collector of rare coins). Most common mintages of coins that were circulated in the past (pre 1964 dimes, quarters, halves, etc) can be bought close to their spot value, but again if you are only buying a few you will be charged a higher percentage fee. Sites such as eBay can be used to buy small lots of silver coins near spot value, or if you are lucky, even below spot value.

Remember, when buying silver or anything else for an investment look for drawbacks in price and buy low. Have patience when looking for bullion coins and get a good deal and don't just take any deal that you find. Be a long term investor and silver should pay off for you in the long run.

4 Trading Tips You will Enjoy!

The Opening Range Trading Tactic Utilized By Professionals by stockguru70

Stock trading is an activity that is largely related to human emotions. When the share price of a stock that an investor bought increase above the buy point, the feeling is good and secured and of course when the share price fall below the price point, the reverse is true. An investor may experience fear or panic in the event the share price drops too much.

I have a previous article of Don catch a falling knife. The article discuss about one of the stock trading strategy is not to buy on a downtrend and this article will explain the human psychology behind trading on downtrend.

When a stock falls below the buy price too much and stays at the bottom for too long, the sequence of human emotions experienced by the buyer evolved from fear to panic to despair. The psychology of the investor is relatively weak at this stage and the tendency is to quickly get out of position and either to sell on break even point or take a slight loss.

When the stock price reverse the down trend and start on a uptrend, the tendency is for the investor to sell the stock near break even point. This is call the relieve effect. Hence, to purchase a stock on a downtrend weakens the buyer's mindset and reduce the tendency of the buyer to hold through the new upward move of the stock price to profit from the new trend. Therefore, it is advisable to trade with the trend and not against the trend.

Handicap Ramps For Every Room In The House

How NOT to Build a Handicapped Ramp by bluebird218

My family, a very LARGE family, ventured to Baltimore to visit their much talked about Aquarium. Ticket prices are around $22 for adults and children ages 3 to 11 are around $13. Children 3 and under are admitted for free. Sometimes, families are not admitted when they purchase tickets during times of big crowds (the time you can enter will be printed on your ticket). We got there fairly early on a weekday, so we were admitted immediately.

The first thing I notices is that strollers are not allowed inside the aquarium. There is a stroller check in near the front entrance. It is free to check your stroller. Our children are a bit older, so strollers aren't used very often, but I pitied the families with smaller children and babies in tow. My sister-in-law had to carry around her 7 month old daughter for 3 hours, and it became tedious at times.

The first exhibit we found inside the Aquarium was the stingray exhibit. The kids were entranced by the 260,000 gallon pool filled with stingrays. We got to see a diver in the tank, feeding the stingrays. In that tank was a green sea turtle that was missing his front flipper. According to the Aquarium, he was rescued in New York, and the flipper was severely infected, so it was amputated to save his life. He now happily swims along with the rays in the large pool.

We moved along to the massive fish displays. This one was called Maryland: Mountains to the Seas and contained fish and other species native to Maryland's waters. I must say that the display cases for the fish were a bit disappointing; all the fish were in small, encased tanks, and no more than 10 people could fit in front of a tank at a time. We were a group of 18, so it took a while for everyone to be able to see the different displays, and it felt like we could only glance at the displays before we had to move on for the next group to see the displays. Although not all the fish were "beautiful", some of the displays were very interesting. My children got to see many fish that normally wouldn't be seen at most aquariums. I will say, though, that there is an overabundance of species of catfish, and after a while, I was ready to move on from the many, many catfish I had seen. There was another area called Surviving Through Adaptation. This display was all about how animals adapt for survival. The children had an enjoyable time at the stone fish display, attempting to locate the fish, as stonefish beautifully blend in with the rocks in their surroundings. We also got to see a giant octopus slime around the tank.

We stopped for lunch at the Aquarium Café, and we were shocked at the overpriced food. It cost us $35 for my family of 5 to eat a mediocre meal, and that was because they had a "special" that my husband and I decided to eat just to save us from paying $9 for a burger combo.

After lunch, we moved on to the shark display. My children were thrilled with the Aquarium's display. The shark tank was basically a circular tank you walked around on a ramp to see. It was really dark in the shark area. There were nurse sharks, sandbar sharks, saw sharks and the sand tiger sharks. I was a little disappointed in the lack of selection, as it seemed they only had a handful of species, but I suppose that trapping a shark for the purpose of placing it in an aquarium is not as easy a task as one would think. The kids, though, were entranced. We got to see a shark feeding (or an attempt at it, as the sawshark turned its nose up at the fish on a stick).

The Atlantic Coral Reef was one of my favorite displays at the Aquarium! This also was a circular tank, but it was brilliantly lit and the abundance of fish amazed us all. The puffer fish, the most massive one we'd ever seen, was a huge hit! We watched, in a trance, as many, many different schools of fish swam back and forth.

We moved along to the Tropical Rain Forest exhibit, which mostly included birds. We were entertained by one particular bird's loud call. The birds were colorful and fascinating to watch. The display also included tarantulas (yuck!) and frogs native to the Tropical Rain Forest. We walked out of the Tropical Rain Forest display to see the various frogs on display. There were poisonous and non-poisonous frogs on display.

The last display we approached at the Aquarium (due to 12 tired children) was Animal Planet Australia. They displayed fish found in Australia, including a lungfish. A lungfish can breathe on land for up to three days, which is good for them during droughts that are common in parts of Australia. There were freshwater crocodiles, bats(!), turtles, and a beautiful waterfall display upon entrance.

Of course, we had to visit the Aquarium Gift Shop so the children could take home a memento of their fun day at the National Aquarium of Baltimore. Stuffed animals at the gift shop are reasonably priced, and it seems they had a vast number to choose from, so no one takes home the exact same toy!

A few more comments: The only way up to the displays was via escalator, which is really fun when you have a five and three year old who are deathly afraid of escalators. There are elevators if you want to go down instead of up, but there are signs saying this is for handicap "only". We looked for stairways, but didn't see any. And, if you park in the Aquarium parking lot, be prepared to pay $21 for parking.

All in all, the family had a great time, especially the children. The parents noticed the overcrowding problem, along with the lack of ability to exit a floor to go to a lower one, along with the mediocre yet overpriced food in the Aquarium Café.
